David Herzig
About the 2026 artist and juror:
Creatively active for five decades David Herzig is a painter devoted to breaking the conventional preconceptions of watercolor as a serious medium for the artist while respecting the integrity of it’s transparent nature.
From earliest days of paddling among waterlilies on inland lakes, the midwest landscape has always played an important part in the artist’s life albeit a more macro view with his plunge into living plant material. Best known for his bold rendering of flowers often executed on a grand scale, his approach is always focused on capturing the subject in it’s natural setting while emphasizing each species in portrait like fashion. The ever changing light compounded by a living subject that continually moves before your eyes presents challenges not encountered by artists using photo reference material.
Herzig earned his BFA from Studio Angelico at Siena Heights, Adrian, MI. although he is self-taught in watercolor. His work has been written about in numerous publications such as American Artist and North Light Books.
