Quick Draw Info
A “Quick Draw” is a 2 hour timed competition that is historically included in Plein Air competitions. Outdoorpainter.com notes that the first quick draw competition on record was devised about 40 years ago for Plein Air artists to show off their skills in a short period of time, and to make a quick work of art to sell for gas money to get home from their event.
We are pleased to include a Quick Draw in our Festival for 2024. Here are the rules for the Sylvania Plein Air Quick Draw.
The Quick Draw will be held Thursday, August 1 from 10:00 – 12:00 pm sharp.
Check in will be held in the tent at the corner of Maplewood & Main from 9:00 – 10:15 am. Entry fee is $10 cash.
Participants will get their surface marked at check in. All participants must stay in the check in-area until 10 am sharp, when artists are “released” to go “quick draw.”
There is no specific boundary area for participants to choose their painting location. We suggest staying close to Main Street to ensure you have ample time to turn in your work before noon.
Participants have exactly two hours (or less) to create a work of art and return it to The Art Supply Depo before 12:01pm. Late entries will not be accepted.
Participants can work in any art media. Art surfaces should be no larger than 20″ in any dimension. Art surfaces should be sturdy, such as wood panel or stretched canvas that can be displayed outdoors on an easel for the Meet + Mingle Thursday night from 5:00 – 7:00pm. Artists choosing to work on paper must provide their own frame, and include framing time in their 2 hour window. Art does not need to be wired for hanging.
Quick Draw artworks will be displayed at the Meet + Mingle, where attendees and the general public can vote for their favorite by QR code until approximately 6:15. The winner will be announced approximately 6:15 – 6:30, and will receive all the cash money taken in by Quick Draw participants. Artwork can be removed by the artist after the winner is announced.
Registered Adult and Youth participants of the Sylvania Plein Air Festival are welcome to participate. Dependent on the ratio of Adult to Youth, we may split the Quick Draw into separate competitions by age group.
In case of inclement weather, the Quick Draw competition will be cancelled with no reschedule date.
